Christians are called to be stewards of God’s gifts; it is a great privilege — one we should be careful not to abuse.
“For everything is from You, and we only give You what we have received from You.” 1 Chronicles 29:14-16
What exactly is Stewardship? “Stewardship is a complete lifestyle, a life of total accountability and responsibility acknowledging God as Creator and Owner of all. Stewards as disciples of Jesus Christ see themselves as caretakers of all God’s gifts. Gratitude for these gifts is expressed in prayer, worship, offering, and action by eagerly sharing these gifts out of love of God and one another.” Stewardship Disciples Respond: A Practical Guide for Pastoral Leaders, p. 6
“Who is a Christian steward? One who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord.” Stewardship A Disciple’s Response: A Pastoral Letter on Stewardship, p.66
“Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus; and where it has been implemented, both givers’ and receivers’ lives have been changed. Stewardship is a way of life, a way of thanking God for all His blessings by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure allotted to us... Stewardship pleases God because the good steward is careful of creation, is respectful of justice and charity, and is prayerful at all times.” Stewardship Disciples Respond: A Practical Guide for Pastoral Leaders, p. 6
“Jesus not only calls people to Him but also forms them and sends them out in His service. Being sent on a mission is a consequence of being a disciple. Whoever wants to follow Christ will have much work to do on his behalf— announcing the Good News and serving others as Jesus did.
Jesus’ call is urgent. He does not tell people to follow Him at some time in the future but here and now — at this moment, in these circumstances. There can be no delay.” Stewardship A Disciple’s Response: A Pastoral Letter on Stewardship, p14 |
